NEW in Canvas: "Missing" and "Late" Assignment Submission Status

"Why am I seeing "Missing" or "Late" labels in the Grades area of Canvas for assignments that I turned in?"

To CSI Students:

In early August 2017, Canvas added new "Missing" or "Late" red labels to your view of the Grades area for certain assignment types. Those assignment types are:

  • Assignments that required an online submission of some kind
  • Graded Discussions
  • Online Quizzes

The labels work as you would expect them to: assignments not turned in once the due date passes will display "Missing". If you submit the assignment after the due date, you will see "Late".

Missing Assignments Submission Status

However, the "Missing" label will also appear if you submitted material in a method other than the way designated in the assignment. An "online" submission for Canvas means it must be submitted through the Canvas interface. If you submit it in class on paper, Canvas will mark it "Missing". Unfortunately, the label will remain even for items that you perhaps submitted to your instructor using a different method, for example "on paper" or through the email.

Your instructor currently has no control over the appearance of this label, nor can it be overridden by the instructor even after a grade is recorded. While this behavior may be addressed by Canvas in a future release, at the moment it cannot be turned off by the instructor or by you.

As a work-around, if you are submitting your paper in class or through email, also turn in something to Canvas assignment link that simply says "completed in class" or "turned in on paper".
