Green Week at CSI 4/14/2012

Members of the Sustainability Council at the College of Southern Idaho have scheduled a full week of activities and events for Green Week April 14-21.

The week will start with the CSI Welding Auction at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 14 in which items made of 75-percent recycled metals will be available for sale. The auction will be held in the Desert building welding lab. Doors will open at 11 a.m. and the auction begins at 1 p.m.

At 7 p.m. Monday, April 16, the movie ‘Gasland’ will be shown in the Recital Hall of the Fine Arts building. This documentary focuses on the process of hydraulic fracturing, known as ‘fracking.’ Admission is free of charge.

The Herrett Center’s Faulkner Planetarium will show ‘The City Dark’ about the effect of light pollution at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 17. Admission is free of charge. The movie will be replayed at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 19.

A trash fashion or ‘Trashion’ show will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 18 in the Student Union Building. Students will design wearable items of clothing from recycled or repurposed materials.

Sgt. Kim Orchard of the Hailey Police Department will do a presentation on safe bike commuting at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 19 in room 214 of the Shields building.

The week will conclude with the annual CSI Sustainability Fair from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, April 20 in the Student Union. There will be jazz music, prizes, and helpful information. Fair participants will include the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, KMVT Television, the Farmers Market at Crossroads Point, the CSI Sustainability council, CSI Horticulture Club, Aramark Food Service, Girl Scouts Silver Sage Council, CH2M Hill, Twin Falls District BLM, Hagerman Manna, Idaho Power Company, Twin Falls Pest Abatement District, ALPHA Idaho, Gem State Paper, Hilex Poly, St. Lukes MSTI, Wills Toyota, Middlekauff Auto Group, Tubbs Berry Farm, and Twin Falls Mosaic.

At the same time, just outside the Student Union, a solar oven competition will take place with prizes awarded for several categories. From 4 to 6 p.m. that afternoon, a kids bicycle safety rodeo will be held in the gated parking lot just west of the main Falls Avenue entrance to CSI.

From 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 21, CSI volunteers will help clean up Rock Creek Park on Addison just west of the old hospital. Buses will leave the CSI bus parking area for the cleanup site at 8:30 a.m.

In addition to the week of events, students and CSI staff are encouraged to car pool or use alternative transportation, and recycle phone books. An Earth Flag will also be flown at the front of campus during the week. A clothing drive will take place all week for four local charities, the Earth Flag will fly at the campus entrance, and free beverages will be available in the Eagle’s Nest when using your Aramark re-useable mug.
