CSI 50 Years logoThis last weekend, CSI celebrated 50 years at an amazing and well-attended event on the main campus. We estimate that around 2,000 people came to help join in the fun. The day was filled with all ages enjoying the day in events ranging from information on programs and CSI history to family-oriented fun like the cotton candy machine to the petting zoo to live music to cupcakes! I visited with people who had been students in some of our early classes on Kimberly Road or at the high school. I also visited with community members who remember the campus as a field and who have watched the college and the city grow together these past 50 years. Everyone seemed to have a CSI story, some vignette connecting them to the college, and everyone was eager and proud to share that story of transformation and opportunity that came as a result of CSI.

The CSI 50-Year Celebration began a year ago with a committee co-chaired by Kathy Deahl and Doug Maughan, and Saturday’s event was co-chaired by Samra Culum and Perri Gardner who brought together a creative and extremely enthusiastic committee (Ansina Durham, Dawn Wendland, Jasmine Lopez, Kat Powell, Judy Heatwole, Polly Hulsey, Cyndie Woods, Tara Nunnelley, Gene Conley, Mevlida Teffer, John Bottinger, and Randy Dill). They arranged and staffed everything: displays, music, hot dogs and nachos, performances, and games. In the days leading up to the event and on that Saturday, there were so many CSI volunteers -- faculty, staff, students, administration! Special thanks for Mayors Don Hall from Twin Falls and Dave Davis from Jerome as well as Jerome and Twin Falls County Commissioners for proclaiming September 12, 2015 as CSI Day!

Several times throughout the day, I was struck by how deeply CSI employees believe in and celebrate the college. For all the many hours of planning, set-up, awesome party, and tear-down, a heartfelt THANK YOU to all who worked so hard to make this an amazing, successful event.

Throughout the year, there will be several important events to commemorate our first 50 years. One notable event will be the mid-October publication of Dr. Jim Gentry’s book, Meeting Needs and Developing Opportunities: The History of the College of Southern Idaho.  Another is the Herrett Forum scheduled for Wednesday, September 16th at 7:30 PM in the Rick Allen Room where six panelists will share their thoughts and memories of the college’s first 50 years.

Saturday’s celebration was a great way to start the new school year, for as we recognize the past and these 50 years that have brought us to this point, we also look forward to tomorrow. As you heard in the State of the College address, we are embarking on several new initiatives including augmenting our dual credit, improving recruitment and admissions and registration processes, continuing remediation reform efforts, engaging in some new and exciting grant directions, enhancing instructional support, reconceiving institutional effectiveness and research, and more. Thank you for being a part of this journey.

I wish you all the best in this new year, and I thank you for your commitment and spirit in making CSI that amazing place where magic happens.

Best Regards,
